Discover in the heart of the Redoute de Ballestras the new exhibition of the famous cartoonist, who marked several generations by his humoristic drawings: his crowds, his cats, his "big woman and her little man"

After celebrating the 30th anniversary of the restoration of the Ballestras Redoubt last September, the city of Palavas-les-Flots is hosting a new temporary exhibition entitled "Permit to smile"! In a current gloomy context, the cultural affairs in collaboration with Didier Dubout, the grandson of the artist, propose you a moment of relaxation with the presentation of works of one of the greatest drawers of his time: Albert Dubout!

From 1924 to 1973, Albert Dubout drew for nearly 250 newspapers and magazines, which is, to this day, unique in the world. Before the war, Dubout denounced the political violence in France, which was divided between two extremes, notably by drawing political meetings that were very rowdy, and even by drawing "a popular deputy", who was protected by a squadron of gendarmes with the support of armored vehicles, or "fear at the Palais Bourbon" after the riots of February 6, 1934. On the other hand, Jean d'Ormesson said "Dubout is the draftsman of the paid vacations". He will present the plate "Spring" which is the most symbolic and known drawing of this social movement (the Parisians leaving the capital and discovering the joys of the countryside). The artist will draw the popular masses, notably by his plates regrouping several hundreds of characters, always with a lot of humor and complacency. Conversely, the bourgeoisie, including intellectuals, are often caricatured. After the war, Jean d'Ormesson said "Dubout is the draftsman of the mass society and the consumer society". He will be presented with drawings on traffic jams (the new scourge of the "Trente Glorieuses"), summer overpopulation and even the singular relationship between the French and their televisions. At the same time, Dubout denounced the excessive and tedious bureaucracy, the paper forms before the computer era. Finally, following recent acquisitions, some twenty drawings will be presented for the first time, including the plate "April Fish" drawing the French (walkers and fishermen) which is a mixture of Indian ink, wash and collage, unique in the history of drawing.
