In the heart of La Redoute de Ballestras, discover the new exhibition of the famous cartoonist, who left his mark on several generations with his humorous drawings: his crowds, his cats, his "fat woman and her little man"
After celebrating the 30th anniversary of the restoration of the Redoute de Ballestras last September, the town of Palavas-les-Flots is now hosting a new temporary exhibition entitled "Permis de sourire"! Against the current gloomy backdrop, cultural affairs, in collaboration with Didier Dubout, the artist?s grandson, offer you a moment of relaxation with the presentation of works by one of the greatest cartoonists of his time: Albert Dubout!
From 1924 to 1973, Albert Dubout drew for some 250 newspapers and magazines, a feat that is still unique in the world. Before the war, Dubout denounced the political violence of a France divided between two extremes, notably with drawings of rowdy political meetings, and even with a drawing of "a popular deputy", the latter walking protected by a squadron of gendarmes with the support of armored vehicles, or "fear at the Palais Bourbon" after the riots of February 6, 1934. As Jean d?Ormesson once said, "Dubout is the designer of paid vacations". The "Spring" plate will be presented, which is the most symbolic and well-known drawing of this social movement (Parisians leaving the capital and discovering the joys of the countryside). The artist drew the popular masses, notably in his plates featuring several hundred characters, always with a great deal of humor and complacency. Conversely, the bourgeoisie, including intellectuals, were often caricatured. After the war, Jean d?Ormesson said, "Dubout is the cartoonist of mass society and consumerism". Dubout's drawings of traffic jams (the new scourge of the Trente Glorieuses), summer overcrowding and even the peculiar relationship between the French and their televisions will be presented. At the same time, Dubout was denouncing excessive, fussy bureaucracy and paper forms before the computer age. Finally, following recent acquisitions, some twenty drawings will be on show for the first time, including the "Poissons d?avril" (April Fish) plate, which depicts the French (walkers and fishermen) in a mixture of Indian ink, wash and collage, unique in the history of drawing.
