Dietrich Buxtehude, an illustrious predecessor of Johann Sebastian Bach, composed this cycle of seven sacred cantatas for the "spiritual concerts" given in the Church of St. Mary in Lübeck, where he was a priest. Inspired by a medieval poem, each of the seven cantatas laments one of the wounds of Christ on the cross.
