More than 450 races are held each year, 120 of which count towards a team competition, the challenge, and an individual competition, the escalot. The Landes race is one of the four bullfights practiced worldwide. It is distinguished from the other three by two particularities. Unlike the other three (corrida, corrida portugaise and course camarguaise), it is practiced almost exclusively with females (Landes cows) and not bulls. The other particularity shared with Camargue racing is that there is no killing during the race. On the contrary, the race serves as much to reveal all the qualities of the Landais bullfighter as those of the cow, who, the object of her ganadero's utmost care, will have the opportunity to take part in around twenty races a year, and this for at least 10 years.
